A sheet conveying device includes a length sensor configured to detect a length of a sheet to be conveyed, and a processor configured to determine the length of the sheet while operating in a first mode and while operating in a second mode. While operating in the second mode, the processor determines a predefined length as the length of the sheet, wherein the predefined length is greater than a shortest length detectable by the length sensor.
