The method comprises the following steps: fitting an evaluation response function taking component concentration as an independent variable and an equipment response value as a dependent variable based on a test result of standard gas introduced into equipment to be evaluated; determining an equipment response function of the to-be-evaluated equipment, wherein the equipment response function is a direct proportion function taking the component concentration as an independent variable and the equipment response value as a dependent variable; substituting the component concentration set value x into the evaluation response function to obtain an equipment response value y, and substituting y into an inverse function of the equipment response function to obtain a component concentration measured value X; and performing performance evaluation on the to-be-evaluated equipment based on the error between x and X. According to the invention, automatic evaluation of the performance of the natural gas detection equipment is realized. Performance evaluation can be carried out by calculating the high-order volume calorific value of the natural gas.
