Embodiment Construction

[0031] The invention is described below in the manner in which it is applied to a wideband CDMA network with a macrodiversity mode of operation, such as a W-CDMA system, arranged in a UMTS operating in frequency division duplex (see E "FRAMES Multiple Access For UMTS and IMT-2000" by Nitula et al., IEEE Personal Communications, April 1998, pp. 16-24). Figure 1 shows the structure of a UMTS network supporting the W-CDMA system.

[0032] The switch of the mobile server 10 is linked on the one hand to one or more fixed networks 11 and on the other hand to a control device 12 or RNC device ("radio network controller") via an interface called Iu. Each RNC 12 is linked to one or more base stations by means of an interface called Iub. Base stations 13 distributed over the network coverage area are capable of wireless communication with mobile stations 14, 14a, 14b. Furthermore, some RNCs 12 can communicate with each other by means of an interface called Iur.

Abstract

The invention concerns a mobile station comprising several receiving units for processing, in macrodiversity mode, respective radio signals transmitted by several distinct base stations and bearing an identical information. When predetermined conditions are fulfilled, the method consists in relinquishing at least partially the macrodiversity mode for the mobile station; commanding one or several base stations to transmit to the mobile station radio signals bearing different data, and controlling the mobile station so that its reception units process said radio signals to receive said different data.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a cellular radio communication using macro-diversity technology. Background technique [0002] The infrastructure of a cellular network consists of base stations distributed over a coverage area in order to communicate with a number of mobile stations located in the zone or cell served by these base stations. The technique of macrodiversity is provided for a mobile station capable of communicating simultaneously with many separate base stations in such a way that in the downlink direction (from the base station to the mobile station), the mobile station receives the same information several times, and in the uplink direction, the base station The radio signals emitted by the mobile stations are picked up to form various estimates which are then combined in the infrastructure of the network. [0003] Macrodiversity enhances system performance by combining different observations of the same information to provide gain in...
