Embodiment Construction

[0017] The term micron (μ, micron) is equal to 1 / 1000 of a millimeter (mm). Microns are sometimes called μm. The term thousandth of an inch (mil) is equal to 1 / 1000 of an inch or 25.4 microns.

[0018] The term "inner surface" refers to the surface of the film or packaging fabric in contact with the packaged goods, which is contained within the package after the package has been formed. The inner surface of the wrapping fabric acts as both a food contact surface and a sealing surface, since some parts of the surface are in contact with the food and other parts of the surface are in the area where the sealing takes place.

[0019] The term "outer surface" refers to the surface of the film or packaging fabric that does not come into contact with the packaged goods, which provides the appearance of the package after it has been formed.

Abstract

Disclosed are packages and methods for packaging perishable foods such as meat, fish, poultry, vegetables or other food products. The packaging comprises a vacuum skin package comprising a film having specific package gas permeability requirements and a framing element within which the packaged goods are held.

Description

[0001] This invention relates to packaging, to packaging for containing meat, fish, poultry, vegetables or other food products, and to methods of packaging goods using such improved packaging. Background of the invention [0002] Perishable goods are susceptible to exposure and contamination by microorganisms such as bacteria, molds, etc. due to contact with airborne organisms or with organisms on surfaces. Contamination can lead to accelerated spoilage, toxin formation and other deleterious effects. There is therefore a need to protect cargo from contact with microorganisms. Packaging such as containing perishable goods in air impermeable materials such as foil, cardboard and oxygen barrier films can provide a barrier to microbial contamination. [0003] However, anaerobic organisms such as Clostridium botulinum produce a potent toxin that is the causative agent of botulism, an extremely vicious and dangerous food poisoning phenomenon. As botulinum tox...
