Embodiment Construction

[0012]The lifecycle of a patent may include multiple stages. These stages generally include invention, filing a patent application on the invention, prosecuting the patenting application to allowance or abandonment, determining whether to file any continuing applications, and paying maintenance fees on the allowed patent.

[0013]At each stage, one or more parties determine the best course of action to take with respect to the invention. For example, when determining whether or not to file a patent, the inventor may know what products are out in the technology area of the invention, a business manager may know how the invention fits in with a company's goals, and a patent attorney may have researched existing patents or applications in the technology area of the patent. These parties will ultimately make the decision whether it is worth the initial investment of filing an application on the invention and then, as each future stage, determine the next course of action.
