103 results about "Self-contained breathing apparatus" patented technology

A self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), sometimes referred to as a compressed air breathing apparatus (CABA) or simply breathing apparatus (BA), is a device worn by rescue workers, firefighters, and others to provide breathable air in an immediately dangerous to life or health atmosphere (IDLH). When not used underwater, they are sometimes called industrial breathing sets. The term self-contained means that the breathing set is not dependent on a remote supply (e.g., through a long hose). If designed for use under water, it is called SCUBA (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus).

Integrated physiologic sensor system

An embodiment of the present invention comprises a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) mask that incorporates a series of physiologic sensors. These physiologic sensors are mounted on the interior of the SCBA mask in such a way as to contact the facial skin of an individual wearing the mask. The physiologic sensors monitor, among other things, heart rate and carbon monoxide and oxygen saturation levels. The physiologic sensors are connected to a transmitting apparatus attached to the SCBA. The SCBA transmitter sends output data from the physiologic sensors to a remote processor. The SCBA transmitter also sends location information of the individual wearing the SCBA mask to the remote processor. The remote processor compiles the physiologic and location data for the wearer of the SCBA and transmits a signal back to the SCBA receiver which, in turn, sends a signal to a display integrated into a SCBA mask. The display indicates to the individual his physiologic status. The display incorporates indicator lights are integrated into the mask of the SCBA to indicate, for example, when bottled air must be switched on, to indicate the emergency situation of the wearer and / or to indicate the direction that the wearer of the SCBA is going. The processor associated with the transmitter also monitors groups of individuals wearing the SCBA masks. In this way, the particular status of several individuals in hazardous environment can be monitored at once and their situation known over a period of time in the hazardous conditions. Specifically, the physiologic condition of the group can be monitored to track the changes in the group condition over the time that the group is exposed to the hazardous environment.

Self contained breathing apparatus

A self contained breathing apparatus includes a pressure vessel which holds a supply of breathing air. The pressure vessel is in fluid communication through a first stage pressure regulator with a second stage breathing regulator. The breathing regulator is operatively connected to a user face mask. When the pressure available in the supply is at a suitable pressure, the pressure regulator provides pressure to breathing regulator at a first pressure. When the pressure in the supply falls to a value indicative of impending depletion of the air supply, a transfer piston in a step up vale shifts. A change in condition of the step up valve causes a step up piston to increase the output pressure from regulator. This increased pressure moves a sensing piston and causes indicating devices in an alarm circuit to be activated. In alternative embodiments, an electronic alarm module may be used.

Self contained breathing apparatus combined duration factor for breathing systems

The present claim enables a breathing system to be assessed with a minimum of attention or experience regardless of type of breathing system. This is achieved by creating an electronic control system for the breathing system which converts all available parameters which affect the ongoing use of the breathing system and converting those parameters in a common basis of time remaining of practical use on the breathing system. The electronic system then combines the common parameters in time and combines as appropriate to produce a single time remaining parameter pertaining to the breathing machine operation. This approach is applied across rebreather and open circuit, land and water based systems such that an operator may use similar skills to interpret the output indications of different types of machines.

Pressure display for self contained breathing apparatus

A self contained breathing apparatus has a display of air pressure within the face mask in the field of vision of the user of the breathing apparatus. The display is four lights that indicate the four quarter-tanks of pressure, and the lights change to indicate the amount of air remaining. A transducer receives tank pressure and provides an electric signal. The air pressure is placed on a bourdon tube which rotates a disk in response to changes in pressure. One half of the disk includes a gradient, and a light source emits light through the gradient to be received by a light sensor. As the disk rotates, the gradient varies the amount of light received by the sensor, so the electrical output of the sensor varies.
