Problems solved by technology

Excessive power draw reduces the time the battery can be used before it needs to be recharged
Furthermore, high power consumption can generate a large amount of heat which can negatively affect device performance and even damage the components of the device if proper protection measures are not taken

Embodiment Construction

[0016] The present invention is directed to integrated circuits. More specifically, the present invention provides a power saving system and method for Universal Serial Bus (USB) based devices. By way of example only, the present invention is applied to portable devices. It will be appreciated, however, that the invention has a much broader range of applicability.

[0017] FIG. 1 is a simplified system for regulating USB power consumption according to an embodiment of the present invention. This diagram is merely an example, which should not unduly limit the scope of the claims. Those of ordinary skill in the art would recognize numerous changes, substitutions and modifications. System 100 includes the following elements:

[0018] 1. Power supply 110;

[0019] 2. Controller 120;

[0020] 3. USB component 130 .

[0021] Although shown above using a selected set of elements for system 100 , various alternatives, modifications and variations are possible. For example, som...

Abstract

A system and method to save power based on USB device includes: power configured to produce the first power supply voltage, controller configured to receive the first power voltage and generate control signal, and USB components configured to receive control signals in the mode of the first or second USB as a response. The controller also deals with information related to the first power voltage and a predetermined threshold voltage. If the first power voltage is above the predetermined threshold voltage, the control signal indicates the first logic state, and if below, the second logic state.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention is directed to integrated circuits. More specifically, the present invention provides power saving systems and methods for Universal Serial Bus (USB) based devices. By way of example only, the present invention is applied to portable devices. It will be appreciated, however, that the invention has a much broader range of applicability. Background technique [0002] Integrated circuits, or "ICs," have evolved from a handful of interconnected devices fabricated on a single silicon chip to millions of devices. Current ICs offer performance and complexity far beyond what was originally imagined. To enable advances in complexity and circuit density (i.e., the number of devices that can be packed into a given chip area), the size of the smallest device feature, also known as device "geometry," has increased with each generation of ICs. become smaller. Semiconductor devices are now being fabricated with features of less than a quart...
