Example Embodiment

[0042] figure 1 A network in which the invention can be used is schematically shown. The figure shows a cellular network. However, it should be understood that the present invention is applicable to any type of network, although it is particularly applicable to networks in which at least some devices communicate using mobile telecommunications / wireless data transmission. A mobile terminal 1 is registered with a GSM / GPRS or UMTS (3G) mobile telecommunication network 3 . The mobile terminal 1 may be a hand-held mobile phone, a laptop computer equipped with a data card or a personal digital assistant (PDA). A mobile terminal 1 communicates wirelessly with a mobile telecommunication network 3 via its radio access network (RAN), which in the case of a UMTS network comprises base stations (Node B) 5 and radio network controllers (RNC)7. Communication between the mobile terminal 1 and the mobile telecommunication network 3 is routed from the radio access network via a GPRS suppor...

Abstract

In a wireless communications network, a system is provided for securely executing the transfer of rights between holders of accounts. The secure transfer of messages may represent the exchange of title to monetary assets. Each title holder is provided with a SIM card containing a transaction application that can interpret menu messages, accept user inputs and generate transaction messages for processing by the system. Each of the menu and transaction messages is delivered as a short messaging service message. The holder inserts his SIM into a mobile handset, and (after authentication with the system) is permitted to interact with the system to conduct rights transfer transactions. Since the transactions are in the form of simple text messages, the mobile handset need not conform to a high specification (i.e. may not support GPRS).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the management of secure transactions in wireless communication networks. In particular, the invention relates to the secure transfer of messages representing the exchange of titles to monetary assets. Background technique [0002] A significant portion of the world's population is not served by traditional financial institutions. Mechanisms for transferring money between "businesses" (eg, business-to-business) or between individuals (one location to another) are limited. As a result, cash often has to physically change hands. The lack of financial institutions can especially strongly affect small-scale merchants in emerging markets. [0003] How such small-scale merchants obtain funds, known as "microcredit" or "microfinance", is seen as a central issue in stimulating economic activity in emerging markets. [0004] Availability of financial services (e.g. microlending / microfinance) is limited by the well-located in...
