[0390] Plant growth conditions and segregation of lines mutants

[0391] Specimens of Arabidopsis homozygous T-DNA insertion mutant lines (in the Columbia background) were identified from ABRC seed stocks. Under controlled environmental conditions (23°C day / 18°C night, 150μmol / m 2 s white fluorescent lighting, 16 hours light / 8 hours dark, and 75% relative humidity) in a cultivation room, these T-DNA strains were planted in nutrient-free soil LB2 (SunGroHorticulture Canada Ltd.BC. Canada) , weekly in nutrient solution (10mMKH 2 PO 4 pH5.6, 2mM MgSO 4 , 1mM CaCl 2 , 0.1 mM Fe-EDTA, 50 μM HO 3 BO 4 , 12 μM MnSO 4 , 1 μM ZnCl 2 , 1 μM CuSO 4 , 0.2 μM Na 2 MoO 4 ) in 3 or 10 mM potassium nitrate for four weeks. Lines mutants were isolated from these T-DNA lines based on the low-nitrate-induced progeria phenotype.

Abstract

The present invention relates to a nitrogen-regulated RING-like ubiquitin E3 ligase gene required for sugar sensing and the modulation of the expression of this gene to modulate a characteristic in a plant. The RING-like ubiquitin E3 ligase of the present invention is involved in mediating nitrogen limitation adaptive responses in plants and its expression is influenced by nitrogen status. Increased expression of this or substantially similar genes can produce plants with improved nitrogen utilization and increased yield.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method for regulating the agronomic traits of plants by regulating the expression of RING-type ubiquitination ligase in plant cells. In particular, the invention relates to methods of improving nitrogen utilization in plants. The present invention also relates to a nucleic acid molecule isolated from Arabidopsis thaliana comprising a nucleotide sequence encoding a protein that mediates nitrogen limitation adaptability and is ultimately capable of modulating the response to nitrogen limitation, Including nitrogen recycling, anthocyanin production, sugar transfer and reduced photosynthesis. Background technique [0002] Improving the phytoagronomic characteristics of crops has been going on since the beginning of agriculture. Most of the land suitable for crop production is currently in use. As human populations continue to grow, improved crop varieties will be required to adequately provide food and feed worldwide (...
