Problems solved by technology

Despite some success, DBT is fundamentally constrained by its limitations in projection geometry; tomographic slices cannot be precisely defined, which causes a loss of axial resolution, which in turn Affects visibility of fine features such as amorphous microcalcifications

Embodiment Construction

[0035] Preferred embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference numerals designate like elements or steps.

[0036] A first preferred embodiment relates to a differential phase contrast cone beam CT system (DPC-CBCT) for in vivo clinical imaging using differential phase contrast imaging techniques. like Figure 1A and 1B As shown, such a DPC-CBCT system 100 includes a hospital grade X-ray tube 102 with an active grating 104 , a high resolution detector 110 and the grating system mounted on a gantry 112 . To ensure mechanical precision and stability, the grating system can be designed as Figure 1A grating system 120 as shown or Figure 1B Grating system 122 is shown. The function of the grating system is to generate different phase steps, the latter being defined as the relative displacement between the phase grating 106 and the analysis grating 108 in the direction perpendicular to the gr...

Abstract

A device for imaging an object, such as for breast imaging, includes a gantry frame having mounted thereon an x-ray source, a source grating, a holder or other place for the object to be imaged, a phase grating, an analyzer grating, and an x-ray detector. The device images objects by differential-phase-contrast cone-beam computed tomography. A hybrid system includes sources and detectors for both conventional and differential-phase-contrast computed tomography.

Description

[0001] References to related applications [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 156642, filed March 2, 2009, the disclosure of which is incorporated by reference in its entirety. [0003] Statement of Government Interests [0004] This invention was made with government support under Grants R01 9 HL078181 and 4 R33 CA94300 from the National Institutes of Health. The government has certain rights in this invention. technical field [0005] The present invention relates to cone beam computed tomography (CT) imaging, and more particularly to phase contrast cone beam CT for breast imaging. Background technique [0006] According to the National Cancer Institute, one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime. Although the reduction in breast cancer mortality has been evident in published reports, 40,000 women still die from the disease each year. [0007] Optimal breast imaging techniques are abl...
