Embodiment Construction

[0038] Example embodiments will now be described in detail with reference to the various drawings. While this description provides specific examples of possible implementations, it should be understood that these details are intended to be illustrative and in no way limit the scope of the application. Furthermore, the figures depict flowcharts that are intended to be exemplary. Other implementations are used. The order of the messages may vary as appropriate. If the message is not needed, it can be deleted and an additional stream can be added.

[0039] Video standards, such as but not limited to MPEG-2 Video, H.263, MPEG4 Vision, and H.264, may have tools and / or profiles that support some modes of scalability. High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) scalable extensions can support spatial scaling (e.g. a scalable bitstream includes signals at more than one spatial resolution) and / or quality scaling (e.g. scalable bitstreams include signals at more than one quality level ). Abstract

A video device may generate an enhanced inter-layer reference (E-ILR) picture io assist in predicting an enhancement layer picture of a. scalable bitstream. An E-ILR picture may include one or more E-ILR blocks. An E-ILR block may be generated using a differential method, a residual method, a bi-prediction method, and/or a uni-prediction method. The video device may determine a first time instance. The video device may subtract a block of a first base layer picture characterized by the first time instance from a block of an enhancement layer picture characterized by the first time instance to generate a differential block characterized by the first time instance. The video device may perform motion compensation on the differential block and add the motion compensated differential picture to a block of the second base layer picture characterized by the second time instance to generate an E-ILR. block.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 809,115 filed April 5, 2013, U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 812,687 filed April 16, 2013, and U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 812,687 filed July 11, 2013 Benefit of Application No. 61 / 845,318, the contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference. Background technique [0003] Over the past two decades, digital video compression techniques have been developed and standardized to enable efficient digital video communication, distribution and consumption. Most commercially widely deployed standards are developed by ISO / IEC and ITU-T, such as MPEG-2 and H.264 (MPEG-4 part 10). Due to the emergence and maturity of video compression technology, High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) was developed. [0004] As both smartphones and tablets increase in resolution and computing power, additional video applications such as video chat, mob...
