Embodiment 1

[0095] Example 1: Preparation of Bimatoprost Hair Growth Gel Composition

[0096] Ethanol was weighed into a suitable medium bottle fitted for mixing, then bimatoprost was added to the ethanol and stirred at medium speed until the bimatoprost was dissolved. To a separate mixing tank add the glycerin, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether and propylene glycol and mix until the solvent is dispersed. The ethanol / bimatoprost solution was then added to the non-aqueous mixture and mixed until the components were evenly mixed (about 5 minutes of mixing). To the above mixture is added the carbomer thickener previously dispersed in water and mixed until well dispersed, once dispersed the base is added to thicken the solution into a gel. Representative formulations prepared according to the methods described above are shown in Table 3 below.

Embodiment 2

[0099] Example 2: In Vivo Treatment

[0100] A study was initiated to systematically evaluate the appearance of hair and eyebrows on the scalp to which bimatoprost gel formulations in Table 3 were applied. The study involved 10 subjects, 5 males, 5 females, with an average age of 70 years (range 50-94 years). Each subject was treated daily by topical application of bimatoprost from the 0.3% w / w bimatoprost formulation in Table 3.

[0101] The study was limited to subjects who had been administered bimatoprost for more than 3 months. The mean duration of exposure to the 0.3% w / w bimatoprost gel formulation was 129 days (range 90-254 days) before evaluation of parameters of hair or eyebrow growth located between control and study eyes. Observations were performed under a slit lamp biomicroscope at high magnification. Record the difference between the control and treated areas using a camera specially adapted for slit-lamp biomicroscopy.

[0102] The observations are as follo...

Embodiment 3

[0106] Example 3: Topical Cream.

[0107] 0.2% w / w bimatoprost topical cream was prepared as follows: Tegacid and spermaceti were melted together at a temperature of 70-80°C. Methylparaben was dissolved in approximately 500 gm of water and propylene glycol, polysorbate 80, bimatoprost and penetration enhancer were added sequentially, maintaining a temperature of 75-80°C. The methylparaben mixture was slowly added to the melt of Tegacid and spermaceti with continuous stirring. This addition was continued for at least 30 minutes with additional stirring until the temperature dropped to 40-45°C. Finally, enough water was added to bring the final weight to 1000 gm and the preparation was stirred to maintain homogeneity until cooled and set.

Abstract

Methods and compositions for stimulating the growth of hair are disclosed wherein said compositions include a cyclopentane heptanoic acid, 2-cycloalkyl or arylalkyl compound represented by the formula I wherein the dashed bonds represent the presence or absence of a double bond which can be in the cis or trans configuration and A, B, Z, X, R1 and R2 are as defined in the specification and a penetration enhancer. Such compositions are used in stimulating hair growth of human or non-human animals.
