Embodiment 1

[0090] In this series of experiments, the test fluids were mixed as defined in the table below. APANA is an octylated phenyl-alpha-naphthylamine commercially available from Vanderbilt Chemicals, LLC, as 1202. The ODPA derivative of tolyltriazole is an octylated diphenylamine derivative of tolyltriazole as a 50% dilution in polyol ester and is commercially available from Vanderbilt Chemicals, LLC, Such as 887E. Methylenebis(dibutyldithiocarbamate) (MBDTC) is commercially available as 7723. Three additives were blended into ISO 32 Group II base oils and tested in RPVOT. Experiments were performed twice and the results averaged. The weight percentages given throughout the specification relate to the total lubricating composition including the base oil. The test results are shown in Table 1 below.

Embodiment 2

[0097] In this series of experiments shown in Table 2, different tolyltriazoles were tested and compared with ODPA derivatives of tolyltriazole. The test fluids were mixed as defined in the table below. APANA is an octylated phenyl-alpha-naphthylamine commercially available from Vanderbilt Chemicals, LLC, as 1202. It should be noted that the concentration of tolyltriazole and derivatives of tolyltriazole varied in the formulations. These additives were mixed with equal amounts of nitrogen in order to maintain equivalent activity in these experiments. In these mixtures, the 2EHA (2-ethylhexamine) derivative of tolyltriazole was bis(2-ethylhexylamine) of tolyltriazole commercially available from Vanderbilt Chemicals, LLC ,Such as 303. Put the additive in 0.2wt.% rust inhibitor Blended into ISO 32 Group II base oils in the presence of RI-A and tested in RPVOT, the rust inhibitor RI-A is commercially available from Vanderbilt Chemicals, LLC. Experiments were performed ...

Embodiment 3

[0102] In this series of experiments shown in Table 3, different antioxidants were tested and compared with APANA (same compound as in Example 2). The test fluids were mixed as defined in the table below. In these mixtures, NDPA is nonylated diphenylamine commercially available from Chemtura Corporation (as 438L), MBDTBP is 4,4'-methylenebis(2,6-di-tert-butylphenol) commercially available from SI Group (eg 4702), 2,6-DTBP is 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol, and TMQ is 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,2-dihydroquinoline commercially available from Vanderbilt Chemicals, LLC polymers (such as RD). Put the additive in 0.2wt.% rust inhibitor Mixed into ISO 32 Group II base oils in the presence of RI-A and tested in RPVOT as defined below, the rust inhibitor RI-A is commercially available from Vanderbilt Chemicals, LLC. The test results are shown below.

Abstract

A lubricating composition comprising at least 90% by weight of a base oil, and an antioxidant composition comprising the components, set forth as weight % of the lubricating compostion: (1) solid alkylated-phenyl-alpha-naphthylamine at 0.01-0.3%, (2) an alkylated diphenylamine derivative of triazole, tolutriazole or benzotriazole, at 0.01-0.3%, and (3) methylenebis(di-n-butyldithiocarbamate), at 0.01-0.4%.

Description

[0001] field of invention [0002] The present application relates to improved antioxidant compositions and lubricating compositions containing the same. [0003] Background of the invention [0004] US Patent Application 2014 / 0045736 teaches antioxidant and antiwear additives for lubricating compositions comprising an aromatic amine antioxidant in combination with an ashless dithiocarbamate. Although alkylated phenyl-alpha-naphthylamines (APANA) are aromatic amine antioxidants, no specific disclosure of this particular compound is indicated. Furthermore, only octylated diphenylamines or nonylated diphenylamines are specifically discussed. [0005] US 6743759 teaches the combination of ADPA derivatives of tolylbenzotriazole with methylenebis(dibutyldithiocarbamate). Optional components include antioxidants, and APANA is described among dozens of possible antioxidant compounds, of which there is no particular preference except for nonylated diphenylamine. The document does no...
