Abstract

A computer-implemented method for determining water treatment parameters includes: receiving, by a computer, a fluorescence emission spectrum of a water sample emitting in response to an excitation wavelength, the water sample comprising a first peak emission wavelength and at least a second peak emission wavelength; receiving absorbance measurements obtained at the excitation wavelength of the water sample; determining, using a computer, the ratio of the measurement at the second peak emission wavelength to the measurement at the first peak emission wavelength, or multiple measurements at multiple peak emission wavelengths a ratio of the sum to a measurement at a first peak emission wavelength, the plurality of peak emission wavelengths comprising at least a first peak emission wavelength and a second peak emission wavelength; and using a computer based on at least the ratio and a linear combination of absorbance measurements to calculate the values of the water treatment parameters.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to methods for indirect determination of parameters (e.g. biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC) , trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP), etc.) method. Background technique [0002] Water treatment plants, including those treating surface water sources, are generally subject to various government requirements for the effluent distributed from the plant and for intermediate by-products that may be produced during treatment. In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires water treatment plants to use a coagulation process to reduce total organic carbon (TOC) concentrations before sanitizing finished water with halogenated / chlorinated disinfectants. [0003] Although various tools or instruments have been developed for monitoring TOC, on-line monitoring of TOC alone cannot provide the necessary information about the aromatization performance of...
