Abstract

An earplug (100) and method for attenuating sound (S). A sound channel (20) extends directly through the housing (10) to guide sound (S) within the ear canal. The vocal tract (20) includes a vocal tract segment (21) sized to fit at least partially within the ear canal. The vocal tract section (21) terminates on one side with a first outer opening (21a) to allow sound (S) to enter the ear canal. The other side of the vocal tract section (21) transitions into a first resonance volume (22) with a relatively wide diameter (A2). The second resonance volume (23) terminates on one side with a second outer opening (23a) and is separated from the first resonance volume (22) on the other side by a sound attenuating mesh (14). This provides resonant cavities (C1, C2) which compensate the attenuation of the network (14) over a broad high frequency (Fr) range.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an earplug and a method for attenuating sound. Background technique [0002] Earplugs provide an easy way to dampen sounds from the external environment into the ear canal. For example, sound attenuation may be achieved by a sound dampening element such as a membrane or mesh disposed in the sound channel through the earplug. The mesh has the desired property of allowing air and water to ventilate or equalize therethrough. However, the acoustic function of the mesh generally manifests itself as increased attenuation at higher frequencies. This may be seen by the user as an occlusion effect, which is not desired. [0003] Excessive rejection at high frequencies can be (partially) compensated for by providing a channel with a specific tuned resonance frequency. However, to provide resonance at the desired frequency range, a long acoustic path may be required, typically about a quarter wavelength of the sound. The chan...
