Abstract

The present invention relates to compositions and methods for improving hydration in a subject with dysphagia. More specifically, the present invention provides a method of treating or preventing dehydration in a subject suffering from a swallowing impairment, such as dysphagia, which may comprise administering to a subject suffering from dysphagia an effective amount of a composition comprising a salivating agent and a cooling agent in a weight ratio of 1: 0.06 to 1: 0.2. Optionally, the composition comprises a hemp thorn agent. The composition may be a powder that reconstitutes prior to administration, for example, upon drinking. A thickener or rarefied binder may be included in the powder and / or may be included in a liquid in which the powder is reconstituted. The composition may be a beverage comprising a salivating agent and a cooling agent in a total amount of at least 3.0% by weight of the beverage, for example at least 6.0% by weight of the beverage.
