Embodiment Construction

[0030] In the following description, many details are set forth in order to understand the present invention. However, those skilled in the art will know that the present invention can be implemented without these details, and various changes or modifications to the described embodiments are also feasible. Although each cell uses a specific number of carriers and sectors in this specification, each cell may use a different number of carriers and sectors (or non-sector cells) in other embodiments.

[0031] 1A, the mobile communication system 10 may be a cellular or personal communication service (PCS) system, which includes a plurality of cells 14, and each cell 14 includes a base station 18. The base station 18 can communicate with a mobile device 20 (such as a mobile phone, a mobile computer, or other types of mobile devices) through a radio frequency (RF) wireless link. The base station 18 is controlled by a mobile switching center (MSC) 12 for circuit switched communication. Fo...

Abstract

A mobile communications system includes a plurality of cell segments each allocated primary carriers to carry circuit-switched traffic and packet data carriers for carrying packet-switched traffic. The packet data carriers include two sets of carriers, a main set of carriers (F1, F2, or F3) and a secondary set of carriers (F4, F5, and F6). The main packet data carriers (F1, F2, and F3) are allocated to corresponding cell segments. The secondary carriers (F4, F5, and F6) are allocated to high capacity segments, which may be segments having high bursty traffic or segments in which a hierarchical cell structure is implemented. For high bursty cell segments, the main carriers (F1, F2, and F3) are used to carry control signaling for performing selection or reselection. However, in such high bursty cell segments, the secondary carriers (F4, F5, and F6) are not used for performing cell segment selection or reselection.

Description

Technical field [0001] The invention relates to the expansion of carrier capacity in a mobile communication system. Background technique [0002] A mobile communication system such as a cellular or personal communication service (PCS) system is composed of many cells. Each cell provides a radio communication center in which a mobile device establishes a call with another mobile device or a wired device connected to the public switched telephone network (PSTN). Each cell contains a radio base station, and each base station is connected to a mobile switching center. The mobile switching center controls call processing between mobile devices or between mobile devices and PSTN devices. [0003] Starting from the original Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS) standard, additional wireless protocols have been developed and implemented. One such protocol is the Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) protocol, which was originally implemented as the IS-54 standard (EIA / TIA / IS-54), and later ...
