A method and system for transferring information from a first computer-based device to a web site, for temporary storage and later transfer of the stored information from the web site to a second computer-based device. First, a communication link is established between a first computer-based device and the web site. Next, the first computer-based device is scanned, via the web site, to determine the information contained on the first computer-based device. The user then selects which of the scanned information is to be uploaded from the first computer-based device onto the web site for temporary storage. Finally, the selected information is transferred from the first computer-based device onto the web site for temporary storage. Once retrieval of the temporarily stored information is desired, the user establishes a communication link between a second computer-based device and the web site. The second computer-based device is scanned, via the web site, to determine the information contained on the second computer-based device. The temporarily stored information, from the first computer-based device on the web site, is then displayed to the user and the user selects which of this temporary information, from the first computer-based device, is to be downloaded from the web site onto the second computer-based device. The selected information is finally downloaded from the website onto the second computer-based device.

Method and system for implementing a global ecosystem of interrelated services

The present invention is directed to a method and management service platform for implementing a global ecosystem of interrelated services. The service platform is comprised of three distinct layers: a physical machine layer; a virtual machine layer and a layer of interrelated services. The physical machine layer may be deployed on large numbers of small generic servers in many geographic locations distributed for enterprise use. Associated with one or more servers are particular resources managed by that particular server. Any server in any geographic location can process any service needed by any client in any other geographic area. The operating system of each physical server is not used directly in the operating environment, but instead, each server runs a platform-independent programming language virtual machine on top of the operating system—this is the virtual machine layer. Services are location independent processing entities that are managed dynamically, configured dynamically, load their code remotely, and found and communicated with dynamically. A generic service container is a CPU process into which arbitrary software services may be homed to a host server at runtime. Thus, a virtual machine layer is an interface layer of service which supports the layer of interrelated srvices rather than the operating system of the physical machines.

System and method for ensuring handoffs across heterogeneous networks

This invention provides a system, method and apparatus for facilitating handoffs from a first communication network to a second communication network, the first communication network and second communication network being heterogeneous with respect to each other. The system, method and apparatus may further include a contextual information server, which stores contextual elements corresponding to a user device and the operating environment of the user device, and a handoff decision function module that evaluates at least one of the contextual elements to determine whether to handoff user device communications from the first communication network to the second communication network. The method and apparatus may further include obtaining at least one contextual element corresponding to a user device and the operating environment of the user device, evaluating the at least one contextual element with a handoff decision function module to establish a handoff decision, establishing a handoff decision, and notifying the user device of the handoff decision. The method for facilitating handoffs from a first communication network to a second communication network may further include receiving a received signal strength indication, receiving a link quality determination, receiving a characteristic of the user device, and determining the location of the user device.

Method and System for Location-Based Wireless Network

Described are a method and a system for granting and denying network access to a device based on a location of that device. A method includes determining a current location of at least one mobile unit, permitting network access to a wireless network to the mobile unit if a network access policy of the mobile unit is configured to permit network access for the current location, and denying network access to the wireless network to the mobile unit if the network access policy of the mobile unit is configured to restrict network access for the current location. The system includes a processor generating network access policy data for at least one mobile unit, the network access policy data configured to one of permit network access and restrict network access for the at least one mobile unit depending on a location of the at least one mobile unit within an operating environment, a wireless switch providing a wireless network infrastructure, a location determination module calculating a current location of the at least one mobile unit, and a plurality of wireless access points in communication with the wireless switch, wherein each one of the wireless access points one of permits network access and restricts network access to the at least one mobile unit based on the current location and the network access policy data for the at least one mobile unit.

Method and system for executing a program under one of a plurality of mutually exclusive operating environments

A method and system within a data processing system for executing a program under one of a number of mutually exclusive operating systems are disclosed. The data processing system includes a nonvolatile mass storage device, a volatile memory, and a processor. According to the present invention, a program which executes under a second operating system is invoked while the processor is executing a first operating system. In response to invocation of the program, the data processing system is forced to a quiescent state. A state of the first operating system is then determined from contents of the volatile memory and stored within either the volatile memory or the nonvolatile mass storage device. In response to storage of the state of the first operating system, at least a portion of the second operating system is automatically loaded into the volatile memory. Thereafter, the program is executed under the second operating system, wherein interchange between mutually incompatible operating systems within a single data processing system is efficiently accomplished. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the method of the present invention is embodied within a computer program product for causing a data processing system to perform the foregoing steps.
