[0018] The present invention is based on the discovery that a bacterial strain Vibrio alginolyticus secretes high molecular weight compounds having inhibitory activity against larval settling and metamorphosis of bryozoans, barnacles and polychaetes. This newly isolated strain of Vibrio alginolyticus was purified and characterized by the present inventors. It is an epiphytic bacterium isolated from the marine macroalga Ulva reticulata (Forsskal) (Chlorophyta, Forsskalaceae). This is a green macroalgae that is widely distributed along the eastern coast of Hong Kong. The strain of Vibrio alginilyticus was deposited on April 30, 2003 at the German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures (“Deutsche Sammlung von Mikroorganismen und Zellkulturen GmbH” (Braunschweig, Germany)) under the accession number DSM 15590.
