Embodiment Construction

[0017] figure 1 is a block diagram illustrating an example communication system 100 . According to one aspect of operation, the system 100 matches caller preferences and callee capabilities to determine one or more allowed renderings that the caller requires and that the callee supports. Rules for handling incoming and outgoing communication sessions are applied to the allowed representations. The system 100 also manages contacts representing various communication devices and / or services associated with the user.

[0018] In the illustrated embodiment, the system 100 includes a figure 1 Endpoint 102, call processing server 104, database 106, and network 108 are coupled in the manner shown. In this document, the term "coupling" refers to any direct or indirect physical, logical, virtual or other type of communication between two or more components, whether or not the components are in physical contact with each other. Other embodiments of system 100 may be used without depa...

Abstract

A method for managing a plurality of contacts, comprising: receiving data corresponding to a user, the data including information associated with at least one of one or more communication devices and one or more communication services; according to the data generating one or more contacts associated with said user; associating an indicator with each of said one or more contacts, said indicator corresponding to a processing rule specifying a condition and an action to be performed if the condition is met; and providing at least one contact to handle a communication session associated with the user according to an indicator of the at least one contact.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to communication systems, and more particularly to managing contacts in a communication network. Background technique [0002] For some communication systems, call handling functions such as screening incoming calls and restricting outgoing calls are required, as well as other functions such as managing contact information. Known techniques for providing this functionality might be expressed using primitive scripting systems or ad hoc strategies. However, these known techniques are generally cumbersome and inefficient. Thus, known techniques for providing this functionality may be undesirable in certain circumstances. Contents of the invention [0003] In accordance with the present invention, disadvantages and problems associated with prior art techniques for providing communication functionality may be reduced or eliminated. [0004] According to one embodiment of the invention, managing contacts involves ...
