[0234]Without being limited, in the below examples, exemplary lubricant compositions were formulated by blending each of the components together until homogeneity was achieved. A partially formulated lubricant composition containing dispersant, detergent, aminic antioxidant, phenolic antioxidant, anti-foam, base oil, pour point depressant and viscosity modifier was prepared. This lubricant composition, which is representative of a commercial crankcase lubricant, is designated as the “reference lubricant” and used as a baseline to demonstrate the effects of the epoxide compound on TBN and seal compatibility.

[0235]The reference lubricant was combined with various different epoxide compounds to demonstrate the effect of the epoxide compound on TBN and seal compatibility. Other components were combined with the reference lubricant in combination with the epoxide compound to demonstrate synergies between the epoxide compound and these other components with respect to TBN and seal compati...

Abstract

A lubricant composition including an epoxide compound is disclosed. An additive package including the epoxide compound is also disclosed. The epoxide compound of the lubricant composition acts to improve compatibility of the lubricant composition with a fluoropolymer seal and improve the total base number of the lubricant composition.

Description

RELATED APPLICATIONS[0001]This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 727,414, filed on Nov. 16, 2012, which is incorporated by reference herein in its entirety.FIELD OF THE INVENTION[0002]The present invention generally relates to a lubricant composition that includes a base oil and an epoxide compound. The invention also relates to an additive package for a lubricant composition and to a method of lubricating a system including a fluoropolymer seal.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION[0003]It is known and customary to add stabilizers to lubricant compositions based on mineral or synthetic oils in order to improve their performance characteristics. Some conventional amine compounds are effective stabilizers for lubricant compositions. These conventional amine compounds may help neutralize acids formed during the combustion process when the lubricant compositions are utilized in combustion engines. However, these conventional amine compounds are generally n...
