Oral care compositions comprising unique silica abrasives and methods for polishing and cleaning dental enamel using these oral care compositions are disclosed.

[0001] cross reference [0002] This application claims priority to Provisional Application Serial No. 60 / 300,766, filed June 25, 2001, under Title 35, US Designator No. 119(e). technical field [0003] The present invention relates to dentifrice compositions, such as toothpastes, consisting of a single or mixed abrasive system including a specialized silica abrasive. The present invention also relates to methods of using these silica dentifrice compositions to clean and polish tooth enamel. Background of the invention [0004] Effective dentifrice compositions should include care and maintenance of tooth appearance by removing dental stains and polishing teeth. It is also supposed to clean and remove foreign debris, thus helping to prevent tooth decay and promote healthy gums. Abrasives help remove the pellicle to which tooth stains are firmly attached. The pellicle usually consists of a thin acellular glycoprotein-mucin coating that adheres to the enamel within minutes ...
