Embodiment Construction

[0035] Figure 1 shows a communication network 3 comprising a packet-based core network 300, access networks 101, 102, 103, 201, 202, network nodes 1010, 1020, 1030, 2010, 2020, several telephone terminals 10, 11 and 20, user 1 and user 1's communication partner 2. Telephone terminals 10 and 11 are assigned to user 1 , while telephone terminal 20 is assigned to his communication partner 2 . Telephone terminal 10 may be, for example, a mobile telephone operating under UMTS, while telephone terminals 11 and 20 may be VoIP telephones.

[0036] The VoIP telephone terminal 11, 20 is an IP telephone or a computer executing an IP telephone client. These terminals are, for example, SIP phones or computers executing SIP clients. According to the specified embodiment of the present invention, the VoIP telephone terminal 10 is a small mobile terminal with low weight, small size and reduced functions, while the VoIP telephone terminal 11 is a convenient fixed terminal such as a computer ...

Abstract

The invention concerns a method of performing a handover of a real time communication session (60, 62), as well as a call signalling server (1011) for performing the handover of the real time communication session (60, 62). The real time communication session (60, 62) is established between a first terminal (10) of a subscriber (1) and a terminal (20) of a communication partner (2) of the subscriber (1) through a packet network (300). The handover is performed from the first terminal (10) of the subscriber (1) to a second terminal (11) of the subscriber (1), whereby the first terminal (10) of the subscriber (1) is associated with a first access network (102) of the packet network (300) and the second terminal (11) of the subscriber (1) is associated with a second access network (103) of the packet network (300). A call signalling server (1011) generates, in response to a trigger, control messages regarding the processing of the handover. The control messages are received and processed at a network node (1010). A communication session (61) with the second terminal (11) of the subscriber (1) is established. Data packets received from the first terminal (10) and the second terminal (11) of the subscriber (1) are mixed onto a data stream of the communication session (62) towards the terminal (20) of the subscriber's communication partner (2). Data packets received from the terminal (20) of the subscriber's communication partner (2) are copied onto data streams of the communication sessions (60, 61) towards the first terminal (10) and the second terminal (11) of the subscriber (1). The exchange of data packets between the network node (1010) and the first terminal (10) of the subscriber (1) via the first access network (102) is terminated within the context of the communication session (60, 61, 62) on completion of the handover.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a method and a call signaling server for providing seamless session mobility. Background technique [0002] Today, there are many different telecommunication terminals such as mobile phones, wireline phones, cordless phones, multimedia personal computers, laptops with softphone capabilities, and so on. Within each category, many different techniques are available. For example, a mobile phone may operate under GSM, GPRS or UMTS (GSM=Global System for Mobile Communications; GPRS=General Packet Radio Service; UMTS=Universal Mobile Telecommunications System). Likewise, VoP phones can be connected to the worldwide telephone network via DSL or Wi-Fi (VoP = Voice over Packet; DSL = Digital Subscriber Line; Wi-Fi = Wireless Fidelity). [0003] Typically, each access network technology belongs to a different service provider or operator. This can cause problems if a user who is conducting a communication session, such as a vo...
