Embodiment Construction

[0022] The present disclosure relates to delivering electrical stimulation, such as vagus nerve stimulation, to modulate the atrioventricular segment (AV segment) of a patient's heart. The electrical stimulation may block conduction of depolarization through the AV node to the ventricle, but in general any stimulation that improves conduction of the AV node may be included. Vagal nerve stimulation may modulate the cardiac autonomic nervous system, for example, by increasing parasympathetic nervous system activity, thereby reducing ventricular rate in response to conducted atrial tachycardia by impeding the propagation of atrial signals through the AV node to the ventricles. Electrical stimulation may be used during episodes of atrial tachyarrhythmias with fast ventricular conduction to distinguish ventricular tachyarrhythmias from supraventricular tachycardia and to prevent delivery of inappropriate therapy to the patient, e.g. in response to inappropriate High voltage shock d...

Abstract

The disclosure describes techniques for delivering electrical stimulation to decrease the ventricular rate response during an atrial tachyarrhythmia, such as atrial fibrillation. AV nodal stimulation is employed during an atrial tachyarrhythmia episode with rapid ventricular conduction to distinguish ventricular tachyarrhythmia from supraventricular tachycardia and thereby prevent delivering inappropriate therapy to a patient.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to medical devices, and more particularly to medical devices for delivering electrical stimulation therapy. Background technique [0002] When working normally, the heart maintains its own natural rhythm and is able to pump enough blood through the circulatory system. This intrinsic rhythm is dependent on intrinsic signals from the sinoatrial or SA node located in the upper right atrium. The SA node periodically depolarizes, which in turn depolarizes the atrial heart tissue such that the left and right atria contract as the depolarization travels through the atrial heart tissue. The atrial depolarization signal is also received by the AV node or AV node, which in turn triggers a subsequent ventricular depolarization signal that travels through and depolarizes the ventricular heart tissue, leaving the left and right ventricles shrink. [0003] However, some patients have irregular heart rhythms, called arrhythmias. Arrh...
