Embodiment Construction

[0022] Aspects of the present invention provide improved visualization analysis techniques that combine mining and visualization based techniques to overcome the limitations outlined above. According to one aspect of the present invention, improved visual analysis techniques are provided that combine the following: a visual episode query tool for interactively specifying episode definitions, a feature that performs pattern mining to help discover important intermediate events within an episode Data analysis is required, as well as dynamic information visualization capabilities for allowing interactive exploration and analysis of clinical event sequence data. Query capabilities allow users to intuitively and quickly retrieve patient populations that satisfy complex clinical scenarios of interest. The disclosed visual analytics system then automatically utilizes event pattern mining algorithms in order to discover important events within the returned population. Finally, anothe...

Abstract

Methods, systems, and articles of manufacture for exemplary visual analytics are provided herein. Visual analytics techniques are provided that combine pattern mining and temporal event visualization-based techniques. Visual episode query tools allow interactive specification of episode definitions and are combined with on-demand data analytics that perform pattern mining to help discover important intermediate events within an episode, and dynamic information visualization that allow interactive exploration and analysis of clinical event sequence data. The disclosed interactive visualization techniques identify events that impact outcome and how those associations change over time.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments of the invention relate generally to information technology, and more particularly to visual analysis tools. Background technique [0002] Over time, a patient's medical condition often develops in complex and seemingly unpredictable ways. Furthermore, variation in symptoms and diagnoses is often observed within patient populations, even when those patients are struggling with the same underlying disease. Similarly, as clinicians work to find a treatment plan that produces desired patient outcomes, they may use a range of therapy sessions, medications, and other interventions. [0003] To this end, scientists have long studied how changes in care and disease progression lead to different outcomes. Most formal research in this field often uses randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Although the results of RCTs provide statistical rigor and serve as the "gold standard" of evidence-based medicine, implementing RCTs is expensive and time-consu...
