The method comprises the steps of: acquiring luminance of each pixel of a to-be-displayed image of the display panel; calculating average luminance of the to-be-displayed image according to the luminance of the pixels; acquiring a luminance adjusting coefficient according to the average luminance; reducing luminance of each pixel of the to-be-displayed image according to the luminance adjusting coefficient; and enhancing a contrast ratio of the pixels of the to-be-displayed image according to the luminance adjusting coefficient. The invention further discloses a system for reducing power consumption of the display panel. Through the adoption of the method, the power consumption of the display panel can be reduced, and clear display can be achieved through enhancing the contrast ratio of the displayed image.
