The spur dike size determining method sequentially comprises the following steps that firstly, a mathematical model between the spur dike size and the branch channel depth and split ratio is built, the branch channel split ratio and channel condition development tendencies before channel improvement are analyzed, and channel improvement targets are determined; secondly, according to the channel improvement targets, the split ratio decrease limit value capable of being borne by a navigation main branch channel after improvement is determined, and therefore the spur dike maximum water blocking area after improvement is determined; thirdly, multiple sets of spur dikes which meet the maximum water blocking area condition and are obtained through combination of different length and height sizes are designed; fourthly, through the mathematical model between the spur dike size and the branch channel depth and split ratio, the amplitude and range of channel depth increase generated by each spur dike after channel improvement is implemented are simulated and calculated; and fifthly, through comparison with the channel improvement targets, the design size, closest to that of the channel improvement targets, of the spur dike is selected out. According to the spur dike size determining method, the influence of the spur dikes on the branch channel split ratio and the like can be estimated in advance, and the channel improvement spur dike size can be determined reasonably.
