Problems solved by technology

[0020] However, this very simple approach is very inflexible and, in many cases, does not result in optimal resource utilization
For example, the transmit power required for a dual-band mobile station on GSM 1900 is significantly higher than on PGSM, resulting in significantly increased interference
Therefore, current methods result in reduced capacity of the communication system and degraded service to users

Embodiment Construction

[0050] In the following, preferred embodiments of the invention are described mainly with reference to the GSM cellular communication system. However, it will be apparent that the invention is applicable to many other communication systems including, for example, third generation cellular communication systems.

[0051] In cellular communication systems, the fixed infrastructure typically includes complex functions for managing resource allocation, in particular for managing subscriber unit handovers. A subscriber unit may typically be a wireless user equipment, mobile station, communication terminal, personal digital assistant, laptop, embedded communication processor, or any communication element that communicates over an air interface.

[0052] figure 2 is a simplified illustration of the structure of the GSM communication system. In a typical GSM cellular communication system, a large number of Base Station Controllers (BSC) 201 (not shown) are connected to a Main Switch...

Abstract

The invention relates to a system for allocating resource in a communication system. A handover control subsystem (401) comprises a distribution profile processor (401) determining a distribution profile for a plurality of resource categories. Specifically, a preferred probability for handing over to different frequency bands is determined in response to mobile capabilities, cell loading and otheroperational conditions. The handover control subsystem (400) further comprises a random number generator (403) for determining a stochastic value for a subscriber unit. A handover controller (409) alocates a resource from the categories of resources dependent on a preferred category selected from the distribution profile and the random number. Thereby a distribution of resources associated with the distribution profile is obtained. The invention is particularly applicable to cellular communication systems such as GSM or UMTS.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to an arrangement and a method for resource allocation in a communication system, in particular a cellular communication system. Background technique [0002] Figure 1 illustrates the principles of a conventional cellular communication system 100 according to the prior art. The geographical area is divided into a number of cells 101 , 103 , 105 , 107 each served by a base station 109 , 111 , 113 , 115 . The base stations are connected to each other by a fixed network, which can transfer data between the base stations 101 , 103 , 105 , 107 . The mobile station is served by the base station of the cell in which the mobile station is located over a wireless communication link. In the example of FIG. 1, mobile station 117 is served by base station 109 over wireless link 119, mobile station 121 is served by base station 111 over wireless link 123, and so on. [0003] When a mobile station moves, it can move from the coverage...
