Embodiment Construction

[0019] refer to figure 1 , generally use 100 to represent the integrated optoelectronic circuit. The optoelectronic circuit 100 includes an electro-optical device such as a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) 104 , or an electro-absorption modulator that receives the optical signal 120 . A monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) 102 is coupled to the polymer-based MZI 104 via a pair of electrodes 128 , 130 and an output transmission line 124 and a ground signal return transmission line 126 . These transmission lines have the properties of microstrip transmission lines. Electrode 130 is a ground electrode and electrode 128 is a radio frequency (RF) or signal electrode (eg, a microstrip transmission line). The MMIC 102 receives a radio frequency modulated signal 132, which is used to modulate the optical signal 120 in the MZI 104, thereby providing a modulated optical signal 122 as an output. Examples of suitable organic substances in MZIs include polyacrylates; polyalky...

Abstract

The invention comprises a novel combination of microwave and photonic packaging to arrive a compact, self contained MZI modulator. The nature of the NLO polymer, that is, its large electro-optic coefficient reduces the drive requirements for the integrated power amplifier (202), allowing a small to medium power amplifier to be used. Microwave high density interconnect (HDI) pakcaging techniques allow the medium power amplifier to be fabricated into a small assembly, which can be mounted directly to the MZI substrate. The integrated amplifier and modulator provides a significant reduced size and lower power, and high bandwidth advantage when compared with existing devices based on inorganic materials.

Description

background of invention [0001] This disclosure relates to an optoelectronic circuit, in particular to the combination of microwave and photonic components of a small, self-contained Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) modulator. [0002] Modulation of optical signals at microwave frequencies, typically greater than 10 GHz, requires external modulation of the laser source to prevent inadvertent modulation (eg, chirp) of the laser frequency. For this purpose, Mach-Zehnder interferometer structures are often employed to create optical phase and / or amplitude modulators. One or both arms of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer contain multiple electrodes to allow phase modulation of the optical signal by the electro-optic effect. These electrodes require a driver amplifier to provide the appropriate electric field to generate the electro-optic effect. The amplifier needs sufficient bandwidth and output capability to drive the reactive load provided by the Mach-Zehnder electrode. [0003]...
