Problems solved by technology

However, using multiple LEDs increases fabrication complexity and makes maintenance more difficult if an LED fails
[0006] In the case of edge-lit signs where the sign body is formed as a light pipe, using total internal reflection to evenly distribute the light across the display surface of the sign, the use of a single LED has been proposed as the source of illumination, but such considerations for traditional sign panels for backlighting Not feasible where light is projected onto the back surface of the sign and shines through the sign directly
Also, in the past, LEDs have suffered significant output degradation over their lifetime and are therefore considered unsuitable for this application

Embodiment Construction

[0044] According to attached figure 1 , illustrating an emergency sign assembly 10 for building exit signs and suitable for use with LED light sources. This device is known as Slide Connet Exit TM , the predecessor of this design was to use 1 or 2 10 watt linear fluorescent lamps.

[0045] The emergency sign assembly 10 includes a mounting base 11, a sign body 12, an electronic board 13, 1 or 2 transparent sign panels 14 (depending on whether the sign needs to be read on both sides or one side) and 1 or 2 15 transparent protective covers. The internal lighting source is installed in the sign body and is driven by the electronic board 13 . A backup energy light source in the form of a battery is installed on the upper part of the sign body 12 to provide energy to the illumination light source when the supply of the main light source is interrupted (such as may occur in a fire). Electronics board 13 also has battery charging circuitry to maintain battery charge when primary ...

Abstract

A lens has a body shaped to project light from a single compact source approximating a point source. The source projects light onto an inward facing surface of a sign panel, and the source is mounted adjacent to one edge of the sign panel. The lens body has a primary axis and a lateral axis perpendicular to the primary axis, whereby the lens body is intended to be mounted with the primary axis passing through a central plane of the sign assembly in a first direction of the sign assembly and the lateral axis is intended to pass through the central plane of the sign assembly in a second lateral direction of the sign assembly.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to Australian Provisional Patent Application No. 2005907027 filed 14 December 2005, the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to the field of emergency lighting and, in particular, provides a new emergency lighting sign design and the type of light source used for said sign. Background technique [0004] Illuminated emergency signs, such as exit signs, are traditionally illuminated by light sources such as fluorescent lamps, which may be used singly or in pairs depending on the application. Fluorescent lamps have a good lifetime, especially when compared to other types of lamps in everyday use, such as incandescent lamps, but their lifetime is much less than that of LEDs. [0005] Some manufacturers have replaced gas-discharge lamps with LEDs in emergency lighting signs, using multiple low-wattage LEDs, ...
