Problems solved by technology

The sharp needles can also carry skin fragments, which can be carried to the brain, or can clog the very thin tubes used for convection-enhancing delivery
In addition, injection pressures for convection-enhanced delivery can be relatively high due to the need for fine-bore catheters and extension tubes
Keeping the percutaneous needle in the injection port is also a concern in this case
In addition, these problems also increase in situations where drug delivery to multiple, eg, six or more, sites of the central nervous system is required

Embodiment Construction

[0081] refer to figure 1 , which shows an apparatus for delivering a drug to a subject's brain. The device is modular and comprises a first part 2 and a second part 4 .

[0082] The first part 2 of the device comprises a first seven-lumen tube 6 connecting the female seven-lumen connector part 8 to an implantable fluid router 10 . The fluid router 10 has seven outputs 11a-11g. Each output 11 is connected to an associated catheter 12 by a single lumen tube 14 (note figure 1 Only one such conduit is shown in ). The second part of the device includes a second seven-lumen tube 16 that connects the male seven-lumen connector part 18 to an external fluid router 20 . External fluid router 20 has seven inputs 22a-22g, each adapted to receive fluid under pressure from an associated pump assembly.

[0083] The male seven-lumen connector part 18 of the second part is arranged to cooperate with the female seven-lumen connector part 8 of the first part, making it possible to connect...

Abstract

Fluid delivery apparatus (2,4) is described for the delivery of fluids to regions of the body, especially for delivery to regions of the brain. The apparatus includes a first length of implantable tubing (6) having a first end and a first fluid connector portion (8) attached to the first end of the first length of implantable tubing (6). The first fluid connector portion (8) is releaseably connectable to a complementary second fluid connector portion (18). An implantable housing (36) is also provided for enclosing and protecting the first fluid connector portion (8). The implantable housing (36) is openable to provide access to the first fluid connector portion (8). For example, the housing (36) may have a hinged lid or cover portion. A corresponding method is also described.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to fluid delivery devices suitable for delivering fluids, such as drugs, to different parts of the human or animal body. In particular, the present invention relates to modular drug dispensing devices for drug delivery to the brain. Background technique [0002] Drug therapy for many neurodegenerative disorders, inherited neurological disorders, brain tumors, and other neurological diseases is compromised by the presence of the blood-brain barrier, which prevents drug delivery from the vasculature or cerebrospinal fluid to the brain parenchyma. Examples of drugs that do not adequately cross the blood-brain barrier include protein molecules such as neurotrophins, monoclonal antibodies, viral particles delivered by gene therapy, and various cytotoxic drugs used to treat tumors. [0003] This drug can be delivered to the brain by infusion into the parenchyma through an indwelling catheter. Once the drug leaves the catheter,...
