Abstract

Provided is a control apparatus for an internal combustion engine capable of using a heavy-gravity fuel, a light-gravity fuel, an alcohol fuel and their mixture as a fuel. The control apparatus comprises a heave / light gravity ratio detecting device (39) capable of detecting the ratio between the heavy-gravity fuel and the light-gravity fuel, and an air / fuel ratio detecting device (41) for detecting the air / fuel ratio of the exhaust gas. The fuel injection rate is calculated on the basis of the heavy / light gravity ratio detecting device so that the air / fuel ratio may be a target air / fuel ratio. The abnormality of the heavy / light ratio detecting device is diagnosed on the basis of the difference between the target air / fuel ratio of the case, in which the engine temperature is within a predetermined temperature range, and the air / fuel ratio which is detected by the air / fuel ratio detecting device.
