The diagnostic method comprises the following steps: a database containing standard grey-scale maps of various partial discharge types is established; the number of discharge times, discharge amplitude and discharge phase angles of the partial discharge within a set work cycle of a GIS to be detected are acquired; a grey-scale map to be identified of the partial discharge of the GIS to be detected is formed according to the number of discharge times, the discharge amplitude and the discharge phase angles; the grey-scale map to be identified is contrasted with the standard grey-scale maps in the database to judge the type of the partial discharge. The diagnostic method can be used for quickly detecting the type of the GIS partial discharge. The detecting system adopting the principle of the diagnostic method can realize automatic detection of the GIS partial discharge, and therefore the GIS partial discharge can be found out in time and the type of the GIS partial discharge can be judged.
