Weather prediction method for forecasting selected events

The invention provides methods, systems, and computer program products for short term probability forecasting of selected weather-related events. These embodiments are adaptable for any geographical region that can be identified and for which a reasonable number of data points exist. The inventive method uses a data set of n observations of m parameters, where the parameters may be statistically correlated. A Principal Component Analysis may be performed, with the data set as input, to provide a reduced set of principal components that are uncorrelated and account for most of the variance in the input data set. An orthogonal transformation may be performed on the reduced set of principal components to provide a rotated set of principal components that are aligned with the corresponding parameters in the input data set. Finally a logistic regression may be performed on the rotated set of principal components to derive an S-shaped predictive equation for the probability of a binary weather-related event of interest. An illustrative embodiment of the invention is given for forecasting the probability for the number of lightning flashes exceeding a selected value, for the western United States climatological area.

Lightning locating system

A lightning detection system for detecting and locating an initial discharge of an initial leader stroke of a lightning flash. An initial lightning discharge produces a pulse that can be used to accurately detect lightning, and more particularly, the location of the initial lightning discharge. In one embodiment, at least three sensors detect and determine the location of the first pulses from initial lightning discharges using time difference of arrival information of the pulses at each of the three sensors. In another embodiment, a single sensor is used to determine the range of an initial lightning discharge from the amplitude of a corresponding initial detected pulse, and to determine the direction from a crossed loop antenna An alternative embodiment of a single sensor system determines a distance of a lightning event from a peak amplitude value derived from a pulse amplitude distribution. In a further embodiment, a lightning detection system provides enhanced lightning location by incorporating weather data from a weather radar with detected lightning information.

The method can conveniently calculate the ground inclination angle at the pole tower of the power transmission line, reflect the actual topographical characteristics of a corridor of the power transmission line, and provide reliable basis for evaluating the lightning protection effect of a lightning wire of the power transmission line.
