2992 results about "Power electronics" patented technology

Power electronics is the application of solid-state electronics to the control and conversion of electric power. The first high power electronic devices were mercury-arc valves. In modern systems the conversion is performed with semiconductor switching devices such as diodes, thyristors and transistors, pioneered by R. D. Middlebrook and others beginning in the 1950s. In contrast to electronic systems concerned with transmission and processing of signals and data, in power electronics substantial amounts of electrical energy are processed. An AC/DC converter (rectifier) is the most typical power electronics device found in many consumer electronic devices, e.g. television sets, personal computers, battery chargers, etc. The power range is typically from tens of watts to several hundred watts. In industry a common application is the variable speed drive (VSD) that is used to control an induction motor. The power range of VSDs start from a few hundred watts and end at tens of megawatts.

Low-cost 3D flip-chip packaging technology for integrated power electronics modules

Resistance and parasitic inductance resulting from interconnection of semiconductor chips in power modules are reduced to negligible levels by a robust structure which completely avoids use of wire bonds through use of ball bonding and flip-chip manufacturing processes, possibly in combination with chip scale packaging and hourglass shaped stacked solder bumps of increased compliance and controlled height / shape. Turn-off voltage overshoot is reduced to about one-half or less than a comparable wire bond packaged power module. Hourglass shaped solder bumps provide increased compliance and reliability over much increased numbers of thermal cycles over wide temperature excursions.

Low Profile Power Conversion System for Rooftop Photovoltaic Power Systems

The disclosed embodiments and principles provide a way to integrate high-efficiency, low-profile power electronics with localized maximum power point tracking (MPPT) into a rooftop shingle-based photovoltaic power system. DC-DC power converters having a height, or profile, as low as ¼ inch for a 200 W power output, are able to be included in a building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) roof shingle. The DC-DC power converters increase the relatively low voltage produced by two rows of series-connected photovoltaic shingles, each including photovoltaic cells, to a high voltage used by a DC-AC inverter. For example, DC-DC power converter increases the voltage produced by two rows of series-connected photovoltaic shingles from several tens of volts to approximately 400 volts. Thus, the DC-DC power converters provide a large voltage step-up using a low profile and with very high efficiency.

A bismuth sodium titanate (Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3) base material is modified by the partial substitution of aliovalent A-site cations such as barium (as BaO) or strontium (as SrO), as well as certain b-site donor / acceptor dopants and sintering aids to form a multi-phase system, much like known “core / shell” X7R dielectrics based solely on BaTiO3. The resulting ceramic dielectric composition is particularly suitable for producing a multilayer ceramic capacitor (10) that maintains high dielectric constant (and thus the capability of maintaining high capacitance) over a broad temperature range of from about 150° C. to about 300° C.
