Abstract

The present invention provides methods and systems for controlling spark plug fouling in newly manufactured vehicles. In one example, the method includes operating the engine with a first direct injection fueling strategy including single intake air direct injection for an engine start in a pre-delivery state, and switching to including a staged fueling strategy for an engine start in a post-delivery state. A different second direct injection fueling strategy for direct injection. In this way, spark plug fouling can be avoided in newly manufactured vehicles.

Background technique [0002] An engine ignition system may include a spark plug for delivering electrical current to a combustion chamber of a spark-ignition engine to ignite an air-fuel mixture and initiate combustion. Depending on engine operating conditions, spark plug fouling may occur, wherein the firing tip of the spark plug insulator becomes coated with foreign matter, such as fuel, oil, or soot. Once fouled, the spark plugs may not provide enough voltage to trigger cylinder combustion until the spark plugs are adequately cleaned or replaced.
