Abstract
An ophthalmic device is disclosed which is a polymerization product of a monomeric mixture comprising: (a) a major amount of one or more first non-silicone- containing hydrophilic monomers; (b) one ormore hydrophobic monomers; and (c) a crosslinking agent mixture comprising (i) one or more di-, tri-or tetra(meth)acrylate- containing crosslinking agents and (ii) one or more di-, tri-or tetracarbamate-containing crosslinking agents, wherein the ophthalmic device has an equilibrium water content of at least about 65 weight percent.
Description
technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to ophthalmic devices, such as contact lenses, that have a high water content. Background technique [0002] Soft contact lenses have been around since the 1980s. It is important that wearing contact lenses is comfortable and safe. However, while there are many people who can wear contact lenses successfully, there are also many people who can only wear contact lenses for a short period of time due to, for example, dry eye syndrome associated with contact lenses. Symptoms of this disorder include, for example, a thin and / or unstable tear film, corneal staining, and subjective symptoms such as ocular discomfort, burning / stinging, and dryness. Wearing contact lenses may trigger the onset of these symptoms or may exacerbate them. [0003] Generally, allyl methacrylate (AMA) has been used as a crosslinking agent to make lenses with high water content. However, AMA is a volatile monomer and there are problems asso...
