Problems solved by technology

Also, since MRI guidance requires immobilization of the patient (to avoid motion artifacts and interference), MR-guided procedures may require the patient to be given general anesthesia, another complex and expensive undertaking
Such procedures are not portable and not available for sites lacking MRI facilities

Embodiment Construction

[0023] Open-loop ultrasound therapy systems are used to deliver ultrasound energy to the target volume without the need for MRI feedback information typically available in existing closed-loop ultrasound therapy systems. Specifically, in conjunction with ultrasound hyperthermia of diseased tissue regions (eg, diseased prostate), the present systems and methods can be used to adequately provide conformal ultrasound therapy from an ultrasound applicator inserted into a patient. One application is the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, also known as enlarged prostate), but other applications and target tissues are also possible. Here, an elongated ultrasound applicator may be inserted into the patient's urethra and generally positioned in place to deliver therapeutic ultrasound energy at or within the lesion. The ultrasonic applicator includes a plurality of elements, each element providing a directed ultrasonic beam, wherein the direction of the ultrasonic beam is a...

Abstract

A method for delivering ultrasound therapy using open loop control includes inserting a distal tip of a therapeutic ultrasound applicator into the urethra of a patient, the distal tip including an ultrasound transducer; acquiring ultrasonic images of the urethra and the prostate of the patient by using an ultrasonic imaging probe; aligning the distal tip of the therapeutic ultrasound applicator with the prostate of the patient using the ultrasound image; therapeutic ultrasound energy is delivered with the ultrasound transducer to the prostate of the patient according to a treatment plan that includes a predetermined limited angular range for therapeutic ultrasound energy that avoids the rectum, neurovascular bundle of the patient, where the therapeutic ultrasound energy is transmitted to the prostate of the patient using the ultrasound transducer. The therapeutic ultrasound is transmitted without temperature feedback data.

Description

[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Application No. 63 / 882,662, filed August 5, 2019, and entitled "Open-Loop Ultrasound Therapy," the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] In general terms, this application relates to ultrasound therapy for medical conditions. Background technique [0004] Existing ultrasound therapy systems, such as focused ultrasound therapy and surgical systems, require or benefit from guidance, which may be provided by ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or other methods. Guidance may assist an operator (human or machine) in spatially and / or temporally controlling the application of focused ultrasound to direct therapeutic thermal energy to a desired (eg, diseased) target or region of interest. [0005] MRI guidance is an expensive proposition that requires placing the patient and MRI-compatible treatment equipment in a spe...
