Embodiment Construction

[0031] The present invention provides a conversion circuit for converting an ion detection current generated by an ion detector into an ion detection signal, said circuit being particularly but not exclusively applicable to a spectrometer, such as a mass spectrometer.

[0032] A mass spectrometer in which the invention can be applied is schematically shown by way of example at figure 1middle. Mass spectrometer 100 is shown to include ion source 110 , beam focusing unit 120 , mass filter unit 130 , detector unit 140 and detector signal processing unit 150 . Ion source 110 may be a plasma source such as an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) source or a non-ICP source such as a filament source. The ion source 110 is arranged to generate a raw ion beam 101 which is focused into a focused ion beam 102 by a beam focusing unit 120 . The beam focusing unit 120 may comprise suitable ion optics known per se. The mass filter unit 130 may comprise a magnetic sector unit or a multi-pole u...

Abstract

A conversion circuit (150 ') for a mass spectrometer is arranged for converting an ion detection current (iD) generated by an ion detector into an ion detection signal (P). The conversion circuit may comprise: an input stage (152) for converting the ion detection current (iD) to an ion detection voltage (VD); an output stage (154) for converting the ion detection voltage into the detection signal (P), the output stage being arranged for drawing a first current dependent on the ion detection voltage; and a supplemental stage (153) for providing a second current (iS) to the output stage dependent on the ion detection voltage. The second current may be substantially equal to the first current.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to an ion detector current converter. More particularly, the present invention relates to a conversion circuit for converting an ion detector current generated by an ion detector into an ion detection signal, such as a frequency signal. Background technique [0002] Ion detectors are well known and are used, for example, in various spectrometers, such as mass spectrometers. Typical ion detectors used in mass spectrometers are Faraday cups, compact discrete dynodes (CDD) and secondary electron multipliers (SEM). In some mass spectrometers, multiple Faraday cups are used in combination with one or two other types of ion detectors, a Faraday cup for ions that occur in large numbers and another type of ion detector for ions that occur in small numbers. [0003] Ions impinging on the Faraday cup may cause a small sense current to flow through a usually high resistance resistor. This resistor can be called a conversion resistor becau...
