Abstract

Systems and methods are provided that improve the measurement of trace volatile chemicals, such as by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography / mass spectrometry (GCMS). The first capture system may include a plurality of capillary columns in series and an enrichment column fluidly coupled to a first detector. The first trapping system may retain and separate compounds in the sample, including C3 hydrocarbons and heavier compounds than C3 hydrocarbons (e.g., C12 highest hydrocarbons, or compounds having a boiling point of about 250 DEG C), and may transfer the compounds from the enrichment column to a first detector. A second trapping system may receive the compound that is not retained by the first trapping system, and may include a fill trap and two columns. The second trapping system may remove water from the sample and may separate and detect compounds comprising C2 hydrocarbons and formaldehyde.

Description

[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS [0002] This application claims priority to US Patent Application No. 16 / 593,934, filed on October 4, 2019, the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference in their entirety for all purposes. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to systems and methods for pre-concentrating chemical samples, and more particularly, to systems having a plurality of different kinds of traps for pre-concentrating and separating various compounds of a chemical sample into individual samples The flow was analyzed by gas chromatography. Background technique [0004] Analysis of volatile chemicals at low to sub-PPB levels in air or other matrices may require pre-concentration of the sample prior to injection into a gas chromatograph (GC), as most detectors are not sensitive enough to analyze chemicals at sub-PPB levels. Volatile chemicals can be measured in outdoor and indoor air to determine their risk to the populations ...
