Embodiment Construction

[0023] Figures 1-12 illustrate one embodiment of the present invention. The illustrated embodiment provides a method for expanding a tube stock into a reconfigured part, such as an example of the reconfigured part shown and designated 10 in FIGS. 1-4 . The blank tube or tube is expanded and formed into a part 10 that is of a desired configuration different from the tube and includes a desired cross-section at one or both ends thereof. The reconfigured or desired part 10 is expanded and formed using the illustrated method, which employs both mechanical and fluid forming forces, as further described below.

[0024] The reconstruction component 10 shown in FIG. 1 is an example of one application of the illustrated embodiment of the invention. The component 10 has a main body portion 12 that is generally rectangular in cross-section, with outwardly displaced facing open ends 14, 16 that are similarly configured. Since the open ends 14, 16 are similar to each other, understanding...

Abstract

A method for expanding a blank tube comprising: providing a hollow tube blank having, in an original configuration, a first open end with a central axis, and a first end with a closed end extending about the central axis. The first part of the inner surface of the section; the first part of the tube blank is initially expanded by inserting a first punch into the first open end of the tube blank, so that the inner surface expands and moves outward, and then the same as in the original The structure is relatively far from the central axis so as to form an initial expansion structure; and the first part of the tube blank is further expanded by hydroforming.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to a method of forming a structural part. More specifically, the present invention relates to expanding a blank by a process including hydroforming. Background technique [0002] It is known to mechanically form metal tube blanks by pressing a punch into the blank to expand the ends of the blank. However, this process is only capable of limited expansion of the billet and only acts on the ends of the billet. It is also known to use fluid pressure to form metal blanks, for example the technique known as "hydroforming". Typical hydroforming techniques can expand a blank by approximately 30% from its original configuration. However, currently available technologies for tube expansion are not suitable for the development trend of hydroforming and the need for larger expansions of tubes, which are beyond what can be obtained with existing expansion methods. This invention addresses this need in the art and other n...
