Embodiment 1

[0038] Embodiment 1-Rapeseed methyl ester blends with hydrotreated Fischer-Tropsch synthetic diesel

[0039] Hydrotreated Fischer-Tropsch diesel, also known as gas-to-liquid or GTL diesel, was blended with rapeseed methyl ester in various volume ratios and its properties were measured.

[0040] Blending gas-to-liquids (GTL) fuel (a hydrotreated Fischer-Tropsch diesel) with biodiesel has synergistic benefits that result from the combined good properties of the two fuels. Neither biodiesel nor GTL fuel contain aromatics or sulfur that typically limit blending ratios with conventional diesel. GTL fuel improves the low temperature flow properties associated with biodiesel and provides increased viscosity. Biodiesel, on the other hand, increases the density of GTL fuel without reducing its low energy density. When biodiesel is used as an alternative base fuel, more (50%) biodiesel can be blended with GTL fuel than the standard 20% blend of conventional diesel.

Abstract

The invention provides a biodiesel and Fischer-Tropsch derived hydrocarbon blend, whereby the characteristics of the Fischer-Tropsch derived hydrocarbon are used to improve the diesel-like characteristics of biodiesel. The invention also provides a blending component for Compression Ignition engine fuel as well as a method of adjusting the density of a hydrocarbon fuel.

Description

field of invention [0001] The invention relates to the blending of Fischer-Tropsch synthetic fuel and biodiesel. Background of the invention [0002] Various agricultural based fatty oils are processed by many companies around the world into "biodiesel", usually methyl or ethyl esters of fatty acids of various triglyceride fatty oils. [0003] Biodiesel can be used "unadulterated" as a diesel substitute, but is more commonly used as a blending component (5-20%) with conventional (crude oil based) diesel, eg SAE 962065. [0004] Advantages of using biodiesel compared to fossil fuels include attractive low sulfur and aromatic content, excellent lubricity and use as a renewable fuel, low net impact on the environment (CO 2 emissions, etc.). [0005] The oxygen content of biodiesel is generally believed to help reduce certain particulate matter (PM) (see SAE 1999-01-1475). [0006] Disadvantages of biodiesel compared to the proposed 2000 Worid Wide Fuel Charter for diesel (ca...
