[0014]To date, suppliers of alternative energy equipment have used distributed generation (DG), colloquially known as “grid-tying,” to incorporate alternative power sources. DG involves coupling alternative power sources to the commercial alternating current (AC) power grid such that the sources can synchronize with, and supply power to, the grid. The grid then supplies any and all loads, including the telecommunication equipment. Unfortunately, grid-tying incurs both AC conversion inefficiencies and the risk of propagating transient high voltage (“spikes”) resulting from lightning. For these reasons, service providers have resisted grid-tying.
