Embodiment Construction
[0015] Referring to FIGS. 1-2 , IV catheter introducer 10 preferably includes a tubular plastic housing 12 , needle retainer assembly 14 , retraction spring 16 , plunger assembly 18 and IV catheter 20 . The plastic housing 12 has an inner bore 22 that tapers between a wide open end 24 and a reduced diameter end 26 except for a short distance below the inwardly projecting annular ring 102 as described below. . The plastic housing 12 is preferably injection molded from a substantially transparent polymeric resin, such as polycarbonate, to allow easy viewing through the side walls 28 . The outer diameter of the housing 12 generally follows the tapering shape of the inner bore 22, so that the sidewall 28 has a substantially equal thickness except where it flares out to form the laterally extending wings 30, and provides a more proximal end. 30 is a series of longitudinally spaced annular projections 31 to create a textured grip area for the user's fingers to grip.
