Abstract

A disconnect switch includes a housing having a movable contact, a stationary contact and a plurality of magnets. The movable contact is adapted to move from a first closed position in which the movable contact is in physical contact with the stationary contact to a second open position. The magnet is positioned at a predetermined position and a predetermined orientation about the axis of motion of the movable contact whereby an arc of current formed by the movable contact is extinguished as the movable contact moves from the first position to the second open circuit position.
