Embodiment Construction

[0019] Various embodiments of the invention are directed to monitoring the surface of a rotor of an electric rotating machine, such as an electric motor. In one embodiment, at least one radio frequency identification (RFID) tag with an integrated sensor is placed on the surface of a rotor of an electric rotating machine to measure operational data of the machine. In one embodiment, the at least one RFID tag with an integrated sensor includes at least one of the following: a temperature sensor, a vibration sensor, a speed sensor, a motion sensor, a pressure sensor, and combinations thereof. An RFID reader reads in real time operational data measured by the at least one RFID tag with integrated sensor on the rotor surface. In one embodiment, a computing unit (e.g., host computer, controller, etc.) may receive measured operational data from an RFID reader, which may perform remote monitoring and diagnostics on the rotor based on the measured operational data, based on the measure...

Abstract

Real time measurement of a rotor (110) surface is disclosed. In one aspect, at least one radio frequency identification (RFID) tag (130) with an integrated sensor (135) is placed on the rotor (110) to measure operational data therefrom. An RFID reader (200) reads the operational data measured from the rotor (110) by the at least one RFID tag (130) with the integrated sensor (135) in real time.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to electric rotating machines, and more particularly to obtaining operational data from rotor surfaces of electric rotating machines. Background technique [0002] One of the leading causes of damage to electrically powered rotating machinery, such as electric motors, is overheating. In the case of electric motors, overheating can permanently damage the motor or cause its service life to be significantly shortened. Some causes of overheating include overloading, poor power conditions, high availability, frequent stops and starts, and environmental issues. Due to these causes of overheating, electric motors typically need to be de-rated in order to maximize service life. In order to prevent overheating of electric motors, it is necessary to limit the temperature of the motor or at least detect warning conditions leading to overheating and eventual failure of the motor. However, current solutions to limit the te...
