Problems solved by technology

The cover glass can be omitted to reduce the size and weight of the device, but omitting the cover glass makes the polarizer and display susceptible to scratches
[0007] Polarizers formed from PVA films and TAC films also sometimes exhibit undesired surface roughness that causes visual artifacts on displays

Abstract

The present disclosure relates to electronic devices with flexible glass polarizers. An electronic device may be provided with a display having a polarizer structure. The polarizer structure can incorporate flexible glass layers. The flexible glass layer can be laminated to other sheets of material within the polarizer structure using roll-to-roll lamination equipment. After the polarizer structures are cut into panels, these panels can be laminated to liquid crystal display structures, organic light emitting diode display structures, or other display structures using sheet-to-sheet lamination tools. UV blocking materials may be incorporated into the display to prevent damage to the polarizer layers in the polarizer structure. Coatings such as anti-reflective coatings, anti-static coatings and anti-smudge coatings can be provided on the polarizer structure. Displays can use a flexible glass layer and an additional protective layer to protect the polarizer layer from exposure to further moisture. Birefringent layers can be incorporated within displays and serve as protective layers for polarizers.

Description

[0001] This application claims priority to U.S. Patent Application No. 13 / 415,780, filed March 8, 2012, and U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 61 / 525,535, filed August 19, 2011, which are hereby incorporated by reference in their entirety this. technical field [0002] The present invention relates generally to optical polarizers, and more particularly, to polarizers in displays of electronic devices. Background technique [0003] Electronic devices often have displays such as liquid crystal displays and organic light emitting diode displays. Displays such as these typically use polarizers. For example, a liquid crystal display may have an upper polarizer and a lower polarizer. The pixels within a liquid crystal display can be controlled to locally adjust the polarization of the liquid crystal material between the upper and lower polarizers to create an image on the liquid crystal display. OLED displays have pixels that emit light. Circular polarizers may be include...
