Problems solved by technology

Due to the rapid evolution of antibiotic-resistant pathogens and the high incidence of drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), these infections may not be treatable by conventional antibiotic therapy
Often, the result is removal of the prosthetic device and further loss of bone and soft tissue, resulting in shortening of the residual limb

Abstract

An implant assembly (30) for a long bone is adapted to support an exo-prosthesis. The assembly (30) includes a stem (22), a subdermal component (24) and a percutaneous post (26). The stem (22) has a proximal end (34) that is adapted to be received in a surgically prepared medullary canal of the long bone, and a distal end (4) having a surface that is adapted to promote bone ingrowth. The subdermal component (24) includes a proximal portion (44) that is adapted for attachment to the distal end (40) of the stem (22), and a fixation surface (55) that is adapted to promote soft tissue fixation. The percutaneous post (26) has a proximal end that is adapted to be attached to the subdermal component (24).
