Abstract

A system for storing data in an industrial production environment comprising a distributed database stored on multiple intelligent programmable logic controller devices. Each respective intelligent programmable logic controller device contains a volatile computer readable storage medium including a process image area; a nonvolatile computer readable storage medium; a control application; an input / output component; a history component; and a distribution data management components. The control application is configured to provide operating instructions to the production unit; the input / output assembly is configured to update the process image area with data associated with the production unit during each scan cycle. The historian component is configured to store automation system data, including the execution instructions and the contents of the process image area, on a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium. The distributed data management component is configured to facilitate distributed operations involving automation system data through a plurality of intelligent programmable logic controller devices.
