Abstract

The invention discloses a traffic statistics method based on wildcard characters for use in a software defined network (SDN). The method comprises the following steps that: a controller partitions flow on SDN switches in the SDN by taking the wildcard characters as units to obtain flow sets; information about flow sets to be collected on the SDN switches is calculated by taking minimization of traffic statistics costs of the SDN switches as an optimization target; traffic statistics requests are sent to all the SDN switches according to the information about the flow sets to be collected on the SDN switches, wherein each request specifies one wildcard character on a certain SDN switch; the SDN switches parse wildcard character fields according to the traffic statistics requests, package traffic information of all flows matched with the wildcard characters to generate response packets, and transmit the response packets to the controller; and the controller generates traffic statistics information according to the collected response packets of all the SDN switches. Through adoption of the traffic statistics method, corresponding statistics tasks can be assigned to the switches according to the traffic condition and resource condition of a current network, and congestion of a control channel is avoided.
